Choosing accounting software in 2026 is no small decision. Both Xero and Registrum are used widely across Australia, but the differences matter when you're running a small business and watching every dollar. Pricing Xero's entry plan starts at around AUD $35/month with limits on invoices and bills. Registrum starts at AUD $8.95/month with a more generous Starter plan, scaling to $59/month for Pro and $129/month for Business. (Prices accurate as of May 2026 — check each vendor's current pricing page.) Australian record-keeping Both platforms help you keep the records the ATO expects: GST tracking, BAS labels (G1–G15, 1A, 1B, W1, W2) and STP Phase 2-aligned payroll data. Xero has the longer track record. Registrum was built Australian-first and includes ABN/BSB validation throughout, plus tax-inclusive pricing extraction (price ÷ 1.1) wired into invoicing. A note on STP lodgement Registrum is record-keeping software. It is not currently listed on the ATO's DSP (Digital Service Provider) register, which means you (or your registered tax/BAS agent) lodge STP through a DSP-certified channel. Registrum prepares Phase 2-aligned payroll data and payslips so the figures are ready to go. Xero is an ATO-listed DSP and lodges STP directly inside its own product. CRM and AI This is where Registrum pulls ahead. A built-in CRM with a deals pipeline and follow-ups, plus an AI assistant (Reggie) that surfaces cash-flow signals from your own data, are not standard in Xero's core plans. Who should choose what? If you need direct in-product STP lodgement and a mature ecosystem of add-ons, Xero is a safe bet. If you'd like one Australian-built tool that handles invoicing, payroll record-keeping, BAS prep and customer management at a lower price — and you're comfortable lodging STP via your agent or a DSP-certified channel — Registrum is worth a serious look.
